Considering the documentary form one of the flagships of contemporary Italian cinema, for its 54th edition the Florentine festival presents a double retrospective of two directors they call,
two of the most significant authors of European cinema: Marcel Łoziński and Paweł Łoziński, father and son who, through their works, have narrated more than forty years of history of their country, Poland
Father and Son and Father and Son on a Journey, two documentaries, the former by the son, the latter by the father, are a significant contribution to the retrospective. After years of anticipating the breakthrough moments of other people's lives to capture them on camera, Marcel's decision to turn the camera around and film himself gave birth to two documentaries from two different perspectives. From Marcel's first steps as a director in the 1970s, to the duos double documentary from 2013 and including Marcel's Oscar nominated (1993) 89 mm from Europe and Paweł's Prix Europa winning Chemo, the films truly reflect an evolving Poland.
Furthermore, Marcin Bortkiewicz, with his new 12 minute documentary Lewa połowa twarzy / Left Side of the Face is one of 24 runners up in the International Competition. The short relates the unforgettable story of Leszek Krutulski, a photographer who since 2010 has traveled the country and captured “half-portraits” of those who agree to sit in front of his lens. In 2020, he plans to start shooting the right side of faces. Standing behind the camera, he talks with his subjects about the passage of time. Lastly, Maciej Drygas comes to Florence with Abu Haraz for a screening in the Far Form Utopia non-competitive section which focuses on stories of communities and peoples of various countries.
The Italian festival, running between the 30th of November and the 7th of December is one of the most important documentary film festivals in the world (its first edition dates back to 1959).
