Feature film directed by Michał Rosa, from 2006.
A simple and modest tale of three people who want to make their dreams come true. Seba sells garlic, sour soup and shoelaces with his father. Marta sings in a choir and an amateur band. Jozef, a former miner, makes a living handing out leaflets in a bird costume. These characters have to make some money: Marta for her dream trip to Norway - she believes she can have a stage career there, Józef for dentures for his wife, while Sebastian needs money to obtain a permit to cut down a tree that is obstructing his view of the cemetery and his mother's grave.
This is a contemplative, sad, nostalgic film, but also one that carries a powerful message. It is about people who do not arouse our interest at first glance, who are seemingly ordinary, we would never notice them in the street.
"I built this script from hundreds of small paragraphs I read in the papers, from stories I heard, police reports, observed scenes and bits of dialogue. I built it from the material of everyday life", said the director.
"This is a multiple-theme composition moving towards an apocalyptic finale, rather like 'Magnolia', or 'Short Cuts' ." (Tadeusz Sobolewski)
