This book endeavours to give a synopsis of what came to be of paramount importance in the last decade of the 20th century - the body. The author shows that the body and issues connected with it have always commanded a significant position in culture. The only thing that changes over time and space is what we call "body." The body itself eludes the discussion, making it an endless quest. The author associates the openness of the body expressed in the title with its discontinuity, wavering nature, and instability, which she reviews and revises, emphasising its sensuality.
"Monika Bakke's book will be useful for the students of art colleges, of the history of art, and culture studies. However, someone who is not familiar with the problems in contemporary art can also find this book worth reading, treating it as a story about the sensing of the world." (Daria Kolacka)
Monika Bakke (b. 1967), philosopher, art critic and exhibition curator, is interested in the theory of culture, especially of contemporary art and the problems of the aesthetisation of everyday life. Her articles have been translated into English and German.
