Wydawnictwo Znak (Znak Publishing House) first published a three-volume edition of Miłosz's poetry in 1993. This second volume of Poems by Czesław Miłosz contains poems written between 1948 and 1969 - an important and difficult period of change for the poet that coincided with the end of his diplomatic posting in the United States and France, his break with the regime of the Polish People's Republic, and a decade spent in exile in France. Following this, in 1960, he assumed a faculty position in the Slavic Literatures Department of the University of California in Berkeley and thus began his long, lonely exile on Grizzly Peak. During these years Miłosz published such famous books as Światło Dzienne / The Light of Day, Traktat poetycki / A Treatise on Poetry, Król Popiel i inne wiersze / King Popiel and Other Poems, Gucio zaczarowany / Gucio Enchanted, and a series of renowned poems like Do Jonathana Swifta / To Jonathan Swift, Piosenka o porcelanie / A Song on Porcelain, Esse, Sroczość, Rozmowy na Wielkanoc 1620 roku / Discussions for Easter 1620, "Do Robinsona Jeffersa / To Robinson Jeffers – which combined to form the canon of Miłosz's poetic oeuvre.
Czesław Miłosz (b. 1911) poet, novelist, essayist and translator. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980.
