Written by Agnieszka Stawiarska, this book is devoted to the earliest period of Gombrowicz's life in literature. The author presents the writer against the cultural backdrop of the two decades between the world wars. She describes his relations with members of the literary community and with those closest to him. Stawiarska also unmasks the autobiographical elements present in his work. The author has drawn on many different source materials. The order and manner in which they are presented allows readers to discover young Gombrowicz through his own literary texts and essays, his correspondence, and the accounts and reminiscences of those who knew him.
Agnieszka Stawiarska is a graduate of Warsaw University and has written numerous essays about the work of Gombrowicz and Milosz among others.
