Jacek Podsiadło (b. 1964) takes something away from pathos in order to give it to ethos. The writer, who is known for his committed involvement to the conservation movement, returns to a tradition of the Romantic period in which subjectivity manifests itself in nature, and then bases his own ethical and aesthetic position on this tradition. He succeeds in this despite the fact that the language of his poems is closer to that of the Beatniks than the Romantics, particularly the way in which praise of creation invariably contains a portion of social criticism. Podsiadlo is such a prolific poet that he has already published two large volumes of his collected works, although he is not yet forty.
