A book that brings together the sermons that Father Tischner has delivered "about sleboda," that is, about freedom, every year since 1981 in the month of August just below Turbacz Peak in the Gorce Mountains of southern Poland. Slowo o ślebodzie / A Word on Śleboda contains thirteen of the sixteen homilies presented by Father Tischner.
The message of these sermons remains current to this day. Father Jozef Tischner repeatedly focuses on the topic of accountability in the face of freedom and reminds listeners of their responsibility to future generations, of the need for achieving mutual social understanding, and of the weight that comes with making socio-political decisions, whether one is a member of society at large or part of the ruling elite.
"In the summer of 1981, Father Jozef Tischner first ascended Turbacz Peak with a group of Highlanders. They went there to say Mass at a chapel that is variably referred to as the Papal or the Partisans' Chapel. In time, these 'Masses of the Mountain People' began to draw crowds numbering in the thousands. The chaplain of the 'Zwiazek Podhalan' (Union of Highlanders) devoted these sermons to the subject of sleboda - freedom, and his reflections were accompanied by Highlander songs. The book and attached CDs or cassettes contain the extant sermons of Father Jozef Tischner. The story of the Masses on Turbacz Peak is described in an epilogue by Wojciech Bonowicz."
