LAB 47 is a non-profit alternative space and a laboratory focused on art research and experimentation. It is a venue allowing local and visiting artists from around the world to present their work in Beijing. LAB 47 was established as the result of the collaboration and intellectual exchange between Aurélie Martinaud and Geng Han. Their purpose was to create in Beijing a new artistic space, which would not only show artworks, but also provide platform for artistic reflection and experimentation. The focus is on promoting new artists, new research in contemporary art thought, while not confining the boundaries of artistic activity too strictly, in order to allow open and free thought exchange and to create space for new ideas and discoveries.
LAB 47 is located in the centre of Beijing, in close vicinity of shops, restaurants, primary school, and also a lot of traditional Beijing dwellings. Therefore, the gallery is immersed completely in the everyday life of local residents, giving them the opportunity to discover and become familiar with contemporary art, to interact with curators and artists. This symbiotic relationship with the surroundings is a key source of pride for LAB 47, as something particularly close to the principles of its founders, whose concept was to create a space of dialogue between the local population and the artistic community.
