The EuroPoems Campaign Poster
EuroPoems (ЄвроВірші - EuroWiersze) presents contemporary poetry from Poland and Ukraine in urban spaces of four host cities of the 2012 European Football Tournament
The project is inaugurated in Kiev on the 12th of June, 2012, with subsequent installments hosted by the cities of Lviv, Kharkiv and Donetsk. The poetry is translated into English and Ukrainian and the selection of verses comes from 24 young Polish and Ukrainian poets.
The Polish authors whose works are part of the campaign include:
Krystyna Dąbrowska, Zbigniew Machej, Karol Maliszewski, Joanna Mueller, Klara Nowakowska, Renata Senktas, Dariusz Sośnicki, Andrzej Stasiuk, Dariusz Suska, Eugeniusz Tkaczyszyn-Dycki, Joanna Wajs and Adam Wiedemann. Some of their Ukrainian colleagues who take part in the project are Yuri Andrukhovych, Katerina Babkina, Andrei Bondar, and Serhyi Zhadan
It is the first project conducted on such a massive scale, and also the first one to present today's poetry from the two countries side by side.
Dariusz Suska comments:
It's increasingly difficult to see poetry, most frequently it remains forever inclosed within the book covers of numerous volumes. But a poem on the metro is given the chance of being seen and perhaps, for the magical instant, it can become a beautiful and peculiar kind of face from the train, one that will remain preserved by memory for a while longer after leaving the train.
The Poems on the Underground project was initiated in 2008 by the British Council and the Book Institute, presenting contemporary poetry from all over Europe in the underground of Poland's capital. In 2011, the cultural programme of Poland's EU Council presidency presented poems from Poland across eight different capitals of the EU as well as Beijing and Tokyo. The EuroPoems campaign is the fifth installment of the Poems on the Underground project.
The participants' works are also aired by the FM-Galicja radio, with broadcasts of the authors' own readings taking place daily throughout the period of the EuroPoems campaign.
The project is inaugurated on the 12th of June, 2012, at 5 pm, at Kiev's Ye Bookstore, "Golden Gate", Lysenka 3. The opening is accompanied by readings from the Polish Dariusz Suska and Renata Senktas
