The exhibition features never-before-seen paintings by Zakrzewski and the artist's works on paper from the '80s
The 1980s are the least-recognised period in the collective work of Włodzimierz Jan Zakrzewski. After the decade of searching for his own creative path in the '70s, several collective and individual exhibitions, the artist travelled to the US in 1981 for a few months. History held him there for about 20 years.
It was in the USA that Zakrzewski's individual poetics were established: geometric abstraction - seen by the American critics as a reference to constructivism and to the idea of suprematist author Kasimir Malevich. It was drawing that dominated that period, in spite of the artist's preference for painting. Small pieces, typically 20x20 cm, could be considered finished works, although they were usually conceptual sketches for oil paintings.
aTAK Gallery is putting on display, for the first time in Poland, the most important achievement of Zakrzewski in that poetic - The Great Drawing from 1986. The masterpiece comprises of 49 elements and reveals the entirety of Zakrzewski's artistic quest.
The earliest works come from 1979: black and white polyptych painted in Warsaw forecasted his future search. The latest work - series of eight drawings under the title Street from 1991 - is an attempt to escape the geometric space.
Exposition's curator: Włodzimierz Nowaczyk.
Opening: November 25, 2010, 6:00 PM.
Running till January 22, 2011.
