Teatr Cinema was founded in 1992. For over 25 years now, the troupe, under the supervision of the visual artist and director Zbigniew Szumski, puts on very distinctive performances.
Teatr Cinema’s performances dominating feature is their polyphonic structure, which organically combines all theatrical genres, at the same time denying their traditional perceptions by the audience. The theatre is mainly associated with the work of Tadeusz Kantor. The artistic, expressive and somewhat surrealist planes of their performances bring to mind the paintings of René Magritte. Aesthetically, but also in terms of a thematic interest in everyday life, Zbigniew Szumski’s performances allude to the Dadaists, the Theatre of the Absurd as well as the ‘miserable sensitivity’ of Polish writer Miron Białoszewski.
Currently, The End of the World exhibition is on at the Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci (Centre for Contemporary Art Luigi Pecci). The exhibition presents the works of nearly 50 contemporary visual artists from around the world. The formula of the exhibition has been broadened to include theatre, performance art and live music. The Polish accents in the exhibition are concentrated around the achievements of the Polish avant-garde, including works by Andrzej Wróblewski and Tadeusz Kantor as well as contemporary artists Agnieszka Polska and Robert Kuśmirowski. The exhibition has already been noted as one of the most interesting and important presentations of contemporary art in 2016.
During their residency at Centro Pecci, Teatr Cinema will create a video installation with live-action actors. The shows will take place on the last weekend of the exhibition, 17th-19th March 2017. Many curators will come to Italy for the last week of the exhibition, among others, Pedro Gadanho, the director of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology in Lisbon, who is interested in working with the Teatr Cinema in the future.
Four artists will take part in the residency:
The Adam Mickiewicz Institute is a partner of the exhibition.
