The first thought of putting together this festival came in 2006. The idea behind it was simple: the organizers wanted to present the most interesting and valuable phenomena in the world of jazz, nu-jazz, electronics and dance music to the Polish public
The goal of the initiative is to seek out and showcase genres and artists which at that time were not present in the Polish media and public knowledge of the listeners and to create an event which would attract audience from the whole Poland and Europe.
Festival organisers have spent the last six years closely watching the lives and careers of the biggest names in the field of electronic music, as well as the promising upcomers. They strive to showcase artists that incorporate in their music the new, fresh and avant-garde ideas and influences and at the same time have the power to reach and inspire a sizable audience.
Throughout the years the festival has hosted some of the hottest stars such as: Autechre, DJ Krush, Prefuse 73, Jamie Lidell, Amon Tobin, Flying Lotus, Battles, Bonobo and Fever Ray, just to name few. For most of them it was the first time they have ever performed in Poland.
Nowa Muzyka has also become the first and only outdoor festival to be staged in a post industrial surrounding of a closed down coal mine with its entire infrastructure pretty much intact and available for all visitors. The combining of contemporary music with architectural heritage of the location as well as the entire Upper Silesian Region proved to be a huge success.
The Festival keeps receiving many signs of recognition from the guest artists, audience and the media. In 2010 it received the European Festival Award for Best Small European Festival.
