London's Marianela Nunez and Thiago Soares star in the Polish National Ballet's "Cinderella" for two holiday performances
Principal Royal Ballet dancers Marianela Nunez and Thiago Soares (originally from Argentina and Brazil, respectively) have performed in a number of prestigious performances at London's Royal Opera House - starring in both classical pieces choreographed by Ashton, Nureyev, Bintely and Dowell, as well as contemporary works by Balanchine, Tudor, Teley and Forsythe. They are also the youngest principal dancers in the company - and a couple in real life too! On stage they are both recognised for their lively, intelligent and enthusiastic interpretations of their roles in "Sleeping Beauty", "Swan Lake", "Coppélia" and "The Nutcracker".
In an interview with The Sunday Times' Nadine Meisner, Soares explained their stage partnership, saying:
It took some time, but now we really understand each other and our timings. She has the ability always to do well, which pushes me to keep up. Also, you know, in partnerships it can be tricky, because one partner might suit a role and the other not. But so far we've been lucky.
Perrault's classic tale about Cinderella, her Prince and her evil stepsisters returns to the Warsaw stage after a relatively long hiatus. In reaching back to Prokofiev's popular ballet,
Grand Theatre chose the choreography of Sir Frederick Ashton - its humour, theatricality, grace make it readily accessible for a wide range of viewers.
The choreography was revamped by the British ballet mistress Wendy Ellis Somes, who once was part of the Royal Ballet herself, together with the Polish National Ballet. The performance takes place on two nights only - December 22 & 23, 2010.
