On September 21, 2013 in the conference room of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews a week long debate on current musical aesthetics begins. An accompanying event to the 56th Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, the discussions are organized by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
The Polska Music Now Debate will be divided into two thematic panels, acting as an introduction to the discussion of the following issues:
1st Panel, 10:00-12:30
- Witold Lutosławski and the “Warsaw Autumn”
- Polish avant-garde of the 1960s continues to inspire many contemporary composers. What was that generation’s strenght?
2nd Panel, 1:30-4:00
- 21st century Polish composers: main trends in contemporary music in Poland
- An analysis of contemporary Polish composers’ activity in the context of international phenomena. What interrelations can be observed between the Polish and international musical community? Who forms the present-day musical aesthetics? Why should the world be interested in latest Polish contemporary music and its composers?
Participants in the debate include:
Harry Lehmann - German philosopher, originator of musical reflection on digital revolution and its impact on contemporary music
Adrian Thomas - prominent musicologist specializing in Polish music
Clement Power - British conductor of contemporary music
Thomas Oesterdiekhoff - executive director, Ensemble musikFabrik.
The debate will be moderated by:
Dorota Kozińska - cultural critic and journalist at the Polish Radio
Rafał Augustyn - composer, music critic, co-founder of the Brevis publishing house
