The 24th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam (IDFA), attracted over 3,600 doc entries. Of these, 319 were selected for the programme, 8 are Polish titles. The festival takes place from 16 to 27 November 2011
The IDFA, founded in 1988 in order to stimulate national and international documentary culture, is one of the biggest events in the world focused on creative documentaries, every year hundreds of professional and visitors from around the world have a chance to screen the best documentaries, selected from a huge field. What most distinguishes the event in Amsterdam is the rich and varied programme consisting of both competitive sections as well as non-competitive.
A premiere world market for documentary cinema is the Docs for Sale section, established in 1996, contains some 450 new high-quality titles, broken down into categories such as human interest, auteur cinema, art/music/culture, and history/politics.The FORUM section is the largest meeting place for filmmakers, producers and commissioning editors in Europe. It offers financing possibilities for creative documentaries: single films, series, and emerging new media formats.
Polish documentaries have been screened annually in Amsterdam since its first edition in 1988 with The Musicians (1960) by Kazimierz Karabasz. This year in the competition for mid-length documentary is Maciej Drygas's Violated Letters (2011). The trip (2010) by Bartosz Kruhlik and Paparazzi (2011) by Piotr Bernas compete for Best Student Documentary.
Presented in the Best of Fests section, part of the non-competitive film programme, is Pawel Kloc's Phnom Penh Lullaby, this section includes documentaries that have made an impact on this year's international festival circuit and which last year captured audiences. In contrast Reflecting Images: Panorama presents films that are thought-provoking in form and choice of theme, here Marta Prus's Vakha and Magomed (2010) is screened.
The Docs Next section presents short films from the new generation of European film talent. Screened during the 24th edition of IDFA are three Polish documentaries produced by the Association for creative Initiatives ę; Brothers (2010) by Emi Mazurkiewicz, I'm Looking for a certain person (2010) by Janusz Kojro and View from My Window, The Chronicles 1968-1979 by Katarzyna Nalewajka, Urszula Klimek, Miłosz Hermanowicz, Kamila Radziszewska and Jakub Piątek.
