The 64th edition of the annual Frankfurter Buchmesse is launched on the 10th of October, with New Zealand as this year’s guest of honour. The world’s largest event of its kind is expected to bring together more than 7000 participants from over 100 countries. Poland also takes part, with a booth of Polish literature coordinated by the Book Institute
The Polish booth (located in Hall 5.0, B947) presents 40 different publishing companies. The stand introduces the newest releases of 2012, as well as the nominees for Poland’s most significat literary awards, such as the NIKE, the Passport prizes of the Polityka weekly, The Kościelscy Award and the Gdynia Literary Prize. A special exhibition is to present the best in Polish children’s and youth literature, selected by the IBBY committee in Poland.
The visitors of the Frankfurter Buchmesse will be presented with a catalogue entitled New Books from Poland. Fall 2012 proposing the best titles as selected by prominent Polish literary critics. They will also receive an updated version of The Polish Book Market leaflet.
The Poland-based Book Institute joined forces with the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation and the Snippy company to produce the free application Neue Geschichten aus Polen. It brings together fragments of 10 different Polish novels, translated into German and available either in the form of an audiobook, or a text. The application is available free of charge from the www.snippy-app.dewebsite, and it can also be obtained through scanning QR codes from the promotional materials provided at the Frakfurter Buchmesse.
The last day of the fair will be concluded with the official presentation of the prestigious German Librarians’ Peace Prize, which is distributed annually since 1950. This year, the award of 25,000 euros will be given to the Chinese writer, poet and reporter, Liao Yiwu.
