Anna Suda and Maciej Fortuna team up with VJ Pillow, mixing their processingbop in a fresh, daring take on musical motifs from Penderecki’s soundtracks. The trio performs their unusual gig as part of the Edingburgh Fringe Festival, at the iconic Summerhall venue in the Scottish capital
The adaptation of Krzysztof Penderecki’s compositions is performed by An On Bast (live electronics by Anna Suda) and Maciej Fortuna (trumpet, live electronics), with the accompaniment of VJ Pillow’s visuals, which employ images from films for which Penderecki composed soundtracks.
An On Bast and Fortuna create in a new convention called "processingbop". Live electronics are mixed with a mainstream jazz sound, and the resulting whole has a sound strongly embedded in a post-bop style. The young musicians say they are inspired first and foremost by the desire to communicate a message, a desire which comes before any rigid frames of musical style. Anna Suda reveals some technical details of their work:
The signal of Maciej’s trumpet is acoustically audible [...] it enters my software where it is controlled by my effects and simultaneously recorded, edited, looped and - after audio monitoring - released, only to undergo different real-time processes such as the live-acta element.
Penderecki is one of the most distinguished Polish composers and conductors, and the composer of music in films such as The Saragossa Manuscript, Katyń and The Shining. Duda and Fortuna first met with Penderecki during his visit at Poznań’s University of Economics in November 2012.
Their new arrangements of the well-known Penderecki pieces have enjoyed a superb reception from audiences and from the composer, and continuation of the experiment seems a nearly natural step.
