What is Mister D.?
After publishing her latest work (Honey, I Killed Our Cats) in 2012, she decided to slightly change her profession:
My native genre remains the written word, but I am tired of literature as an industry. I think that Polish society is very unpleasant. But I can’t write books about it because I hate engaged literature. But here I could suddenly express all my gloomy reflections on roadside tarts, pimps, dough, and cruising in Audis. I felt free and happy.
Dorota Masłowska not only wrote all the lyrics (not entirely different from her previous creative activity), but also composed the music and became the project's vocalist. Even though she reached out to the most skilled producers, they decided to keep the rawness and naivety of her compositions, leaving it as amateurish and kitsch as possible.
All of the above makes Mister D. an unidentified object. Is it a pastiche music project, a literature project or a combination of both, leaning on one side or the other in different aspects?
Just like Snow White and Russian Red, Mister D. has instantly become a viral hit. Partially thanks to the flashy video directed by Poland's no. 1 music video specialist, Krzysztof Skonieczny aka GłębokiOff, but also because of its originality and its form, which was consciously tailored to the Internet’s tastes.
3,500,000 views on YouTube alone equals a great success, and immediately let Mister D. tour regularly, giving noisy, punk-influenced live performances that are no less controversial than anything else signed ‘Masłowska’. Reviews of her album varied from the deepest appreciation to the most brutal criticism but again she managed to attract the attention of the masses and come up with an artistic product that is so hard to ignore.
