Wasilewski's musical education began at the Grażyna Bacewicz Music School in Koszalin, following which he continued his studies in the Jazz and Popular Music Department, at the Academy of Music in Katowice. In 1991, in cooperation with S. Kurkiewicz, he established Simple Acoustic Trio (which achieved its final shape in 1993, after Michał Miśkiewicz joined the band). With the trio, Wasilewski gained laurels at various jazz festivals and competitions, and recorded a number of albums. Between 1994 and 2009 the ensemble formed the rhythmic section of the Tomasz Stańko Quartet. Together they performed concert tours, and recorded for ECM Records.
Moreover, Wasilewski collaborated with Manu Katche (Neighbourhood, 2006; Playground, 2007). In 2008, having renamed his band the Marcin Wasilewski Trio, he made the January album for the ECM label, which led him to receive the Fryderyk Chopin Award in the Best Jazz Performer and Best Jazz Album catogories.
The latest album of his Trio, entitled Faithful was released in 2010, under the watchful eye of Manfred Eicher, the legendary ECM Records founder and producer. The ensemble subsequently won the Best Acoustic Jazz Group title in the Polish Jazz Forum Annual Readers' Poll.
