The FACT exhibition also presents some of Wodiczko’s earliest works, including Personal Instrument (1969), which many critics consider groundbreaking. This installation was constructed to pick up surrounding sounds and transform them into a ‘personal soundscape’. The artist described the piece:
The instrument transforms the sounds of the environment.
The instrument functions in response to hand movements.
The instrument reacts to sunlight.
The instrument is portable.
The instrument can be used any place and any time.
The instrument is for the exclusive use of the artist who created it.
The instrument permits him to attain virtuosity.
The exhibition also showcases Veteran Helmet (2015), one of his most recent works. This installation uses modern technology to help traumatised war veterans share their experiences.
The exhibition is part of the Liverpool Biennial 2016 and has been supported by Culture.pl and the Polish Cultural Institute in London.
