The Royal Scottish Academy hosts a presentation of art from Poland, aiming to present a particular phenomenon of contemporary artistic migration. Over the years, Scotland has attracted a large community of international artists to its shores
In the past decade, the wave of 'new Scots' coming to study, work and live in Scotland, has included a very strong Polish voice. The work being produced by these Polish artists has attracted great interest and there is now a dynamic Polish influence running through the Scottish contemporary scene.
The Here / Now exhibition aims to highlight a number of the key young players in this movement. The exhibition asks what attracted them to Scotland to learn and develop careers; how they straddle their careers in both countries; and if/how their practice in Scotland differs from a similar experience in their homeland.
The invited artists selected for this opportunity are:• Ola Rek
• Magdalena Blasinska
• Grazyna Dobrzelecka
• Aleksandra Zawada
• Agata Dymus-Kazmierczak
• Joanna Lyczko
An exhibition of mainly paperworks, the show would look at printmaking, multiples, oils, watercolour, photography, drawing and installation. The show will be in the RSA Project Room for the duration of the Edinburgh International Festival.
To coincide with the exhibition, Edinburgh Sculptural Workshop and Royal Scottish Academy have offered an opportunity for a Polish-based artist to undertake a 3-month residency in Edinburgh. The one selected for the 2012 residency is Kuba Bąkowski.
The invitation to research and make new work in Scotland acts as a catalyst for debate about how Scotland can attract international attention through its finely supported network of cultural support initiatives and residency infrastructure.
Colin Greenslade, Programme Director at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture, and the curator of Here / Now states:
Watching the development of these Polish artists find their feet in the Scottish art scene has been fascinating for me. These artists have not only taken root here, they have flourished - developing interesting careers and shouting with a distinctly individual voice. The show promises to take the Festival by storm this summer. I strongly recommend that it is on your Edinburgh itinerary!
