The programme is made up of four parts: Felix Mendelssohn's "String Quartet in F minor" Op. 80 and Fryderyk Chopin's "Sonata in B-flat minor" for Piano, Op. 35, as well as two pieces by Górecki. The performance features Anna Górecka on the grand piano and Kwartet Śląski (made up of Szymon Krzeszowiec, and Arkadiusz Kubica on the violin, Łukasz Syrnicki on the viola and Piotr Janosik on the cello).
Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933-2010) was a Polish composer who won a loyal international following in Western Europe and America in the 1990s mainly thanks to the magical rhythm of his Symphony No 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs). In the 1950s he drew influence from Luigi Nono, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Krzysztof Penderecki and Kazimierz Serocki. But changed to a more minimalist sound but the mid 1970s. He died in his hometown of Katowice on November 12, 2010.
