The play is familiar to the TR Warszawa’s head manager, who at the beginning of his career staged it successfully at the National Stary Theater in Kraków. After almost two decades, Grzegorz Jarzyna has now returned to Witold Gombrowicz’s script. The premiere will take place on 10th October 2016 in the State Theatre of Nations in Moscow.
The director will show the conflict between the system of social standards and prohibitions, and individual freedom. A character of calm and quiet, Yvonne is a metaphor for the inner protest of a powerless person, who doesn’t want to and can’t live in an imposed system. In interview for Culture.pl, Jarzyna explained that paradoxically, the deterioration of the political situation in Russia helped him to begin working with the Russian theatre.
‘I won’t agree on a cultural intercourse impasse between our countries. This is only a political game,’ says the director, paying compliments to the State Theatre of Nations’ troupe. ‘We are constantly exchanging ideas. I admire them, theatre is most important for them. Working with Russian actors has transpired as a very pleasant surprise for me.’
Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy stars Michaił Trojnik, Alexander Feklistov, Daria Ursulak, Agrypina Stiekłowa, Siergiej Epishev, Kirił Byrkin, Maria Fomina and Michaił Popov. Felice Ross is responsible for light direction, and Jacek Grudzień composed the show’s music.
The State Theatre of Nations, located in the very centre of Moscow, is a space open to experiments and international collaboration. Its founders designed it as an educational centrum for new generations of theatrical creators.
