The Gaude Mater 2011 POLISH SACRAL MUSIC project presents a series of four concerts in four European cities. Its aims to promote the sacral-themed works of Polish contemporary composers as well as religious works compiled in the archive of the 'Jasna Góra' monastery
The four cities that comprise the project (London, Moscow, Paris and Kiev) were specifically chosen in accordance with a speech given by former Pope John Paul II's in Częstochowa during 1991's VI "Global Youth Days" event.
The Pope proclaimed:
After a long period of time, during which borders were effectively closed off, the church in Europe can finally breathe freely with both of its lungs [...] For the good of future generations it is important that the new Europe should rest on the foundations of those spiritual values, which comprise the internal core of her cultural tradition.
"Gaude Mater" plans to mark the 20th anniversary of this event in both eastern and western Christian Europe by performing the most accomplished pieces of Polish sacral music -both old and new.
