Following the huge success of the first US retrospective of Andrzej Żuławski in 2012, BAMcinématek, the Polish Cultural Institute New York, and the Polish Film Institute present this five-day series (from19th to23rd February), showcasing the country’s best new films of 2012-2013. Featuring selections from this year’s Gdynia Film Festival, Poland’s largest annual film event, the series highlights a new generation of directors coming of age and the remarkable rejuvenation Polish cinema has undergone in recent years.
I decided that this is the perfect time to show these movies to our young, diverse audience of Brooklyn and to present to New York the new generation of Polish cinema classics – says David Reilly, the curator of the event, who chose the films to be presented
Maciej Pieprzyca, Dawid Ogrodnik – director and main character of Life Feels Good and Jowita Budnik – Polish actress and star of Papusza are to appear during the film review.
The films to be presented include Wałęsa: Man of Hope, Ida, Imagine, Papusza, Life Feels Good and The Closed Circuit.
We cannot predict in advance how many people are willing to see Polish films and what will be the reaction of the audience. It is some kind of a test for us all. We may consider continuing the series but it will depend on the quality of Polish movies in the future, if the American audience will still be interested in Polish cinematography and of course on the popularity of such events – says Jerzy Onuch, the head of the Polish Cultural Institute New York
The Brooklyn Academy of Music's BAMcinématek is a repertory film program which presents classic films and retrospectives, and is, along with the Lincoln Center, one of NYC's premier destinations for those wishing to appreciate foreign cinematography.
