Contemporary ballet and opera classics are the focus of the eighteenth edition of Bydgoszcz's festival, which kicks off with Giacomo Puccini's "La Bohème," performed by artists from the Opera Nova theatre group
Lovers of original music performances can hear Georg Friedrich Handel's Orlando played by Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, a Dutch group which focuses on baroque music. The group also perform Johann Sebastian Bach's Kunst der Fuge in performances conducted by Jan Willem de Vriend.French and Swiss ballet shows will also make their Polish debuts. The Swedish Cullberg Ballet, considered one of the best contemporary dance companies in the world, will come to the city for the first time in ten years. The company's Scandinavian dancers will present Ekman's Triptych.
The Béjart Ballet Lausanne company, founded by French choreographer Maurice Béjart showcase two performances from their patron's repertoire: Dionysos and Le Chant Du Compagnon Errant, with additional choreography by the company's artistic director, Gil Roman. The Gdynia Music Theatre will perform seminal British classics "Spamalot" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."
Audiences can also survey a selection of the most interesting Polish productions of the previous season. These include Poznań Grand Theatre's Mary Stuart by Gaetano Donizetti: a show that garnered rave reviews for both director Dieter Kaegi's unconventional approach and strong acting from the cast, as well as the Grand Theatre in Łódź. The latter merges Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Béla Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle into a single, experimental production.
