Polish translator Sława Lisiecka receives the North Rhine Westphalia's translator prize and commences the literature programme of Klopsztanga introducing German audiences to contemporary Polish writers such as Sylwia Chutnik and shedding light on Ryszard Kapuscinski
The first Pole to receive the award, translator Sława Lisiecka, as explained by the jury, was sought out for her, "unique language skills and understanding of the nuances and expressions used in contemporary German works, best visible in her translations of Thomas Bernhard's books". Given out by Kunststiftung in Düsseldorf and the European College for Translators in Straelen and amounting to 25,000 Euros, the prize is the best funded award for translators in Germany. Lisiecka started translating in the 70ties, and has made the works of Germans Ingeborg Bachmann, Hermann Hesse, Elfriede Jelinek, and Friedrich Nietzsche available to Polish audiences. Two additional distinctions were given to Elżbieta Kalinowska and Katarzyna Leszczyńska for her work on novels and essays by Herta Müller.
The Translator Award initiates the Lesefluss Rhein/ Readings Along the Rhine series. Nine poets - Esther Kinsky, Marion Poschmann and Norbert Scheuer from Germany; Julia Fiedorczuk, Adam Wiedemann and Dariusz Sośnicki from Poland; and Hélène Gelens, René Huigen, Erik Lindner from the Netherlands - are travelling along from Straelen to Köln, Bonn and Düsseldorf reading their works. The event is a contnuation of the efforts of a group of writers during the Oderreise/ Readings Along the Oder 2011 and culminates with the opening of the Wege durch das Land/ Paths Through the Country literature and music festival at the Corvey castle in Höxter. During the event, Wisława Szymborska's poems are recited in the original and in German and Polish writer, poet, and literary critic Andrzej Stasiuk talks about the significance of poetry as a mode of expression and about its importance for linguistic variety in Europe. With the aim of creating a space for mutual inspiration and work of writers and poets from Poland and Germany, The Reading along the Rhine and the Oder projects were initiated by Kunststiftung NRW and the Kleist Museum Frankfurt/Oder the in 2004 when Poland joined the European Union.
On the 16th of May, in Bielefeld an event honouring Ryszard Kapuściński takes place. The evening includes the showing of a documentray film by Gabrielle Pfeiffer A Poet on the Frontline: The Reportage of Ryszard Kapuściński and Austrian writer and translator Martin Pollack's reading of extracts from his works. Simultaneously, the Bielefeld public library holds an exhibition about Ryszard Kapuściński open till June 26th 2012.
Sylwia Chutnik, acclaimed Polish writer meets with her readers on May 23rd in Darmstadt and May 24th in Dortmund. Her debut book Kieszonkowy atlas kobiet/ Weibskram was recently published in German and confirms her critical views on society.
