Monika Borzym could be a representative of the youngest generation of Polish jazz vocalists. Unfortunately for us, she has chosen to work in United States.
Borzym studied at the Frederic Chopin State Music School in Warsaw, Poland. She had a year-long-gap in her studies, 2005–2006, when she went to the USA to get a grip of the language. Not surprisingly the journey ended up with her attending the John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois and starting to learn jazz improvisation from Gail Bisesi in Chicago. Later on she received a full scholarship at the Frost School of Music in Miami. In 2006 she started to study jazz in Poland at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music.
A list of her collaborations is impressive, considering the fact Borzym is only 24 at the moment: John Scofield, Steve Cardenas, Larry Campbell, Tony Scherr, Kenny Wollesen, Seamus Blake... And this is just the top part of this list.
While in high school she took part in a big band festival in New Trier, Illinois, where she was awarded in the Outstanding Soloist category. The violinist, Michał Urbaniak, invited her to sing at the inauguration of the Jazz Jamboree fm on her albums: NY-based producer Matt Pierson, the four-time Grammestival in Warsaw, Poland. And finally she received a three-album contract proposition from Sony.
With this large company as a sponsor, Borzym could invite her musical mentors to perform on her albums: NY-based producer Matt Pierson, the four-time Grammy Award winning arranger Gil Goldstein, as well as brilliant musicians such as Aaron Parks, Larry Grenadier or Eric Harland.
Her first almu, Grils Talk, is filled with interpretations of songs originally sung by: Abbey Lincoln, Rachael Yamagata, Joni Mitchell, Erykah Badu, Estelle, Feist, Marisa Monte, Bjork, nad Dido.
In 2013 Sony released her second album, containing songs written and composed by Monika together with the pianist Mariusz Obijalski.
