Jerzy Małek started learning the trumpet at the age of 13 on joining a local brass band. He received a thorough musical education at the music school in Elbląg and then at the Faculty of Jazz and Contemporary Music at the Academy of Music in Katowice.
He won many awards as a soloist, bandleader and composer including: Jazz and Blues Musical Contest in Gdynia, "Key to the Career" at Pomeranian Jazz Autumn, Grand Prix at Jazz Juniors and two nominations to the Fryderyk Music Award.
Today, bound for a new musical direction, Małek widens his harmonic and melodic context adding some rhythmic elements inspired by European folk music and contemporary multicultural sounds.
His latest album Air features a quartet, leaving lots of space for collective improvisation and enriching means of interpretation of the trumpet.
His another album, Stalgia, was recorded with great European musicians: Arild Andersen, Hans van Oosterhout, Marcin Wasilewski and David Doruzka.
