While studying in New York, he met Jaco Pastorius, Mike Clark and Robbie Gonzalez. In mid-80’s Kochan moved to Montreal. He played and recorded with some stars of the world jazz, including John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Pat Labarbera, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Liebman, Gary Thomas, Franz Hautzinger, Lars Danielsson or Axel Dörner. In 1995 he returned to Poland and has performed in various musical settings at numerous festivals (Warsaw Summer Jazz Days, Jazz Pianist Festival in Kalisz, New Yorkers Festival, Kaunas Jazz Festiwal, Audio Art in Krakow).
Kochan recorded about 20 solo albums, including Visitor (feat. Pat LaBarbera), Corporate highlanders, Gray Angel, Standard Transmission (feat. John Abercrombie), Plastinated Black Ship (feat. Adam Pierończyk, Eddie Schuller), Monorain (feat. Andre Leroux, Jean Pierre Zanella), Another Blowfish (feat. Michel Donato, Piotr Wojtasik, Eric Vloeimans), New Expensive Head (feat. Cuong Vu, Eivind Aarset, Skerik), One Eyed Horse (feat. Greg Osby and Franz Hautzinger), Yearning (feat. Uschihashi Kazuhisa, Franz Hautzinger, Francois Corneloup, Adam Simmons, Sławek Jaskułke).
