Don't Panic! We're From Poland
"Don't Panic! We're from Poland" is the name of the annual "musique actuelle" showcase organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute that has been taking place in Warsaw since 2009.
Don't Panic! We're From Poland is a story which begun in 2008. The idea of organising the very first Polish music showcase was brought from the no longer existent Budapest's music conference in RegiON. This idea was the answer to domestic void in the promotion of interesting Polish musicians gathered in one place at the same time. It is widely known that music festivals are the fuel of Polish music industry, however; the proportion of international to Polish artists in the line-up has changed over the past few decades from 20 to 80 %.
Who needs such a showcase? First and foremost, people from abroad who are curious about Polish music, interested in its potential, import or even brief knowledge about it. The first edition of Don't Panic! We're From Poland took place in Warsaw, December 2008. Its name and bunny logo (designed by Tomo Żyżyk) were quickly acknowledged and widely used abroad; hence from a local event it has quickly become a cyclic presentation of Polish music in the most significant places all across the world. We are still far from developing a proper foundation of Polish music export, but this is how our brand Don't Panic! We're From Poland started to be perceived internationally.
In the past couple of years national artists earned a place in SXSW and CMJ in USA, The Great Escape in the UK, Reeperbahn Festival and C/O Pop in Germany, Eurosonic Noorderslag in the Netherlands or Primavera Sound in Spain, whereas Warsaw showcase became a part of European Music Fair. The Adam Mickiewicz Institute summed up this period of time with 30 events in over 14 countries, promoting over 70 carefully selected artists and as a result, previously anonymous Polish music gained a pink-blue screaming face.
The Institute promotes Polish culture around the world and actively participates in international cultural exchange. It is a national cultural institution which aims to increase the value of Poland's brand as a cultural asset and boost Poland's impact and efficiency in the area of culture. So far:
- more than 4000 cultural events in 28 countries have been presented to over 40 million viewers
- the Institute has presented Polish music at leading clubs and festivals in cooperation with key partners: SXSW, CMJ, Culture Collide, The Great Escape, Liverpool Sound City, Reeperbahn Festival, C/O Pop, Eurosonic Noorderslag, Primavera Pro, Waves Vienna, Tallinn Music Week, Womex, Jazzahead, London Jazz Festival, Edinburgh Jazz And Blues Festival, Tokyo Jazz Festival, Jarasum Festival
